Broken Record

Posted 11/12/2017 3:58pm by Michael Scheidel.

Hey Good Folks!
Last night a group of great young men and their dads along with me and my sons (Troops of St. George) camped out in our top field for our winter camp out.  We had a blast and originally planned to camp the whole weekend but the record cold temps on Friday night caused us to cancel as we are not all equipped to handle the super cold temps.  We camped last night instead which was only a few degrees "warmer" than Friday but better because no winds!

BROKEN RECORD

Friday night's bitter record cold and sooner than expected arrival crushed lots of our crops in the field and high tunnels.  Our rainbow chard, which was beautiful and juuuust about ready to harvest, got whacked as did all turnips and cauliflower in the field.  We lost about 1000 heads of perfect head lettuce that was protected under row cover but no amount of cover would have protected the plants from THAT kind of cold.  Spinach looks great, and we harvested broccoli until dark on Friday to get as much as we could out of the field before the coldest night.  I hope I don't sound like a broken record for griping about mini-but-significant farm disasters but we try to share the joys and struggles of farming and being completely depending on the weather!

CSA 2018

We will soon be accepting deposits or full payments for our 2018 CSA season.  This will be our 11th year in business as a CSA farm and we are grateful for all of your support.  Stay tuned for more news soon.

NO CITRUS

Hurricane Irma devastated a large percentage of Florida's citrus crop this season, including the fruit grown by Thorpe's Organic Family Farm.  The Thorpes  have provided us and our customers with fantastic organic citrus consistently during the dark months of the year up north for the past several years.  The little fruit that was spared is understandably going to their community in NY.  So we will have to wait another year for some of the best citrus around!

Stay tuned for more farm news.

Gratefully Growing!
