Field News, CSA Dates and Pastured Chicken!

Posted 5/25/2019 9:17am by Michael Scheidel.

Hello folks!

The season is upon us and some of you have already tasted the deliciousness of spring!  We are seeing some good growth already and are hopeful for a great season.

The high tunnels are full of heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers and specialty peppers.  Potatoes are ready to be hilled for the first time of the season, all field peppers (hots and sweets) as well as eggplant are in the ground and summer squash/zucchini is in the ground and soaking up the sun. Loads of varieties of greens including head lettuces are growing well as are the broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots and beets.  Herbs are a bit slow so far but we are hoping they jump up soon and our cut flowers are slowly taking root and growing out (sunflowers get planted today!).  Snap peas will likely be ready for first picking next week and our heirloom pole beans are soon going to wrap their tendrils on the netting and begin climbing.

If you have already joined or are considering joining our CSA here is the schedule of first pick up dates:

Tuesday Farm: June 4th 4-6

Wednesday Hershey (Woo de La Kitchen): June 5th after 10 a.m.

Friday Orwigsburg (Healthy Habits Natural Market): June 7 after 10 a.m.

Saturday Farm: June 8th 9-12

We do prorate the cost of shares for those who join after the season begins!  Our CSA farm pick ups are also the venue for those who just want to shop and aren't CSA members.  I will be sending out instructions to folks who will order their shares online each week so stay tuned if that's you.

Our spring round of pastured chickens are out on grass and growing fast!  I changed the source for our chickens this year because I wasn't happy with some characteristics of the previous breed.  What a difference!  These birds are vigorous eaters and foragers and are more active on pasture.  We do have more available so if you are interested in the best tasting/most thoughtfully and purely grown chicken your family can eat, reserve your birds today.  See the post on our website from 4/19 with pricing and ordering details.

Gratefully Growing!
