We're having a veggie sale and a walking farm tour this weekend from 10-12.  The farm walk will begin at 11:00 and might take up to an hour.  If you plan on joining us for the walk, please dress appropriately (proper footwear and a hat) and expect uneven terrain.  

Pre-ordering through our website begins now and closes Thursday at 8:00 p.m.  We will have pastured eggs, local raw cheese, possibly fresh baked bread and additional random veggies that are not on the pre-order list this week that we'll have for sale as well.  To place an order, please closely follow the instructions below.   Remember, if you do not receive a confirmation e-mail, you did not order correctly!  Looking forward to seeing you this Saturday.

Well, we're in full swing with the grape vines shooting and blooming, veggies maturing and being planted, potato plants poking through the tilled ground, new asparagas reaching for the sky, strawberries setting fruit, chickens grazing on spring grass...  It makes my mind spin sometimes watching our farm really come to life each new season.  There is really so much to observe and appreciate.  I'd say this farm is humming with new life!  That includes our baby who is due the first week in July (stay tuned!!!)

TWENTY PERCENT   

After removing the protective row cover from the tomatoes and surveying the frost damage by each variety I counted a loss of 329 plants of 1500 total.  That is a loss of about 22%.  Thank God I have all the replacement plants I need to make up for the loss!  The rest of the plants look great.  Now it's time to start dreaming of colorful, juicy maters!

CSA

We still have shares available for our CSA.  We offer pick up locations here at the farm on Tuesdays, 4-7, the Pottsville Farmer's Market on Saturdays from 8-12, and at Good Eatz Green Cafe' in West Reading on Thursdays from 11-6.  Spread the word!

VEGGIE SALE

We are planning a sale for this weekend in conjunction with a farm tour for new CSA members.  Stay tuned for an e-mail in the next day or so with details.

WE'RE CANCELLING OUR TOMATO PLANT SALE for this weekend!!!  The veggie sale is still on (same time) but the forecast is calling for possible frost/freeze on Sunday and Monday nights.  This means I will likely need every replacement plant I've got in case we get a "killing frost".  I just planted about 1500 tomato plants as well as cucumbers and squash on Monday.  We just got a hail storm and I checked the plants I've got in the field and they look ok.  Pray for frost free conditions on Sun. and Mon. and sorry to cancel the plant sale.   Stay tuned.

Like a knucklehead, I typed up the following message at 5:30 this morning and somehow, forgot to send it!  My apologies.

HEIRLOOM TOMATO AND PLANT SALE
We will again be selling plants this weekend including heirloom tomatoes, flowers, and basil.  Six pack plants will be sold for $4/six pack or $1/single plant.  Basil plants in 3" pots will be $2.  This year we will allow folks to mix and match their tomato plants because, well I love a good mix of tomatoes as much as anyone else! We will also be selling certified organic seed potatoes for the garden for $1/lb.  The potato varieties are German Butterball (russet skin/yellow flesh), Yukon Gold (yellow skin/yellow flesh), and and Sangre (red skin/white flesh).   There will be no pre-ordering of plants and they go fast so get here early!

If you haven't ordered veggies yet for this weekend, the store closes tonight at 8:00 p.m.  I wasn't sure if they would be ready so I did not offer them through the online ordering but we should have young French breakfast radish and some salad mix available as well.   


Plant Sale

I have been growing my own onion plants each year and have lots of extra available so I'll be selling bunches of 25 for $2.50  Here are the varieties:

-Ailsa Craig-these grow huge; an English garden sweet onion; fresh eating onion

-red marble-red cippolini, those small flat onions; stores very well

-gold coin-yellow cippolini; stores very well

-copra-yellow storage onion; we are still eating the crop from last season!  Stores very well.

Onion plants always grow much larger than onion sets you buy at the hardware store!  

Potato Seed

I offered German Butterball Potato but also have certified organic Sangre (red skin, white flesh) and Yukon Gold (yellow skin, yellow flesh) potato available of planting as well.

Well the weather isn't breaking as fast as many of us would like (last year at this time we had alreay had 2 weeks in the 70's) but it is still time to get your gardens in order! This Saturday, May 4th, we will be combining a veggie sale and our annual Heirloom Tomato and Plant Sale here at the farm.  Veggie pick-up and plant sale will be from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. rain or shine.

Emily just worked like mad to get all of the winter coats, hats, and gloves put away for the season.  The driving force was a combination of her "nesting" instinct and the excellent weather we had last week.  This time last year we had warm weather for a couple of weeks making making for perfect and early planting conditions so everything was in and up early.  

FIRST WAVE

Last week gave me the opportunity to get the first wave of seed and seedlings in the ground.  Here's some of what I got planted: spring onions (lots of them!), spinach, chard, kale, head lettuce, pac choi, napa cabbage, multi-colored radish and turnip, carrots, beets, salad mix, fava beans....  The peas are finally up and yesterday, you'll be happy to know, I bumped up all of my heirloom tomato seedlings to larger flats where they'll grow until I transplant into the field in 3-4 weeks.  Today I bump up flowers, herbs, peppers, and eggplant.

HENS

Our new hens have gotten off to a rough start.  We had a gusty wind in the middle of the night which somehow moved our egg wagon over it's moorings and rolled it about 25 feet backwards, crushing one of the new girls and destroying our feed bin.  Lesson learned.  So I went up last night to make sure it was secure as we were expecting wind and found a skunk stuck inside the electric poultry netting.  I wont explain my ridiculous 5 minute dance with this stinky thing but eventually it slipped under the fence, enduring a little shock to get away from the insane two-legger (me).  When they start really laying and settling in to their new home, you'll see their delicious eggs here at the farm or at the market!

BLUEBERRIES AND ASPARAGAS

Next week our blueberries and asparagas plants arrive.  I've always said that I'm not going to plant asparagas until I know we've found the farm we're staying on.  Welp, we plant next week.  This old beat up farm needs a lot of love and we're working real hard to improve it, the home and the land.

     ]]>Fri, 12 Apr 2013 06:32:07 -0500<![CDATA[Veggie Sale this Saturday at LPF!]]>I accidentally sent the "Chickens..." e-mail twice instead of this: we are having a sale this weekend at the farm. Online ordering begins now and ends on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. and pick up is at the farm this Saturday, April 6th from 10-12.   In addtion to our veggies we will be offering raw cheeses, our own fresh eggs, and possibly Emily's delicious breads.  As the weather begins to warm and we have more sunlight, we will have larger quantities of veggies available more regularly so that means veggie sales every couple of weeks.  For those who have never ordered or those who have forgotten the process follow the directions below and call if you have any questions.  Order early as we have a limited amount of veggies and they go real fast.  If you place an order PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO PICK UP!
