The Transformation of Yoga During the Pandemic
It seems like a different lifetime—but it was only 2020. The lockdown rules for the Covid-19 pandemic were relaxed slightly, allowing six people to meet outdoors. After months of delivering yoga classes via online streaming platforms, we could finally gather in person for a class.
My sister-in-law had a large garden, making it the perfect place to meet without breaching social distancing rules. I eagerly planned our first outdoor class. What followed was a revelation for me: outdoor yoga.
Embracing the Elements
With senses heightened by months of lockdown, every pose and sequence felt different. Every noise, every breeze, every temperature change, and every movement of the clouds became part of our practice. We embraced it all and found joy in our new surroundings. We loved it so much that we continued our classes even in the rain!
The connection to nature added a special dimension to our practice. The sounds of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the fresh air invigorated our minds and bodies. Each class became a unique experience, deepening our sense of wellness and community.
Building Our Outdoor Yoga Space
When we started to build Little Peace Farm, one of my priorities was to establish an animal-free area for outdoor yoga classes. The perfect spot was at the highest point on the farm, where we could gaze down at the beautiful village of Tissington, our new home.
The Excitement of New Beginnings
Recently, I mowed our yoga area for the first time in 2025 as the days grew longer and the sun began to warm the ground again. I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement at the thought of hosting classes in this beautiful space. The vision of our oasis, surrounded by nature, was finally coming to life.
As the weather improves, it won't be long before we can resume outdoor yoga classes and wellbeing retreat days. I cannot wait to welcome everyone back to the farm and share this remarkable environment with them.
The Benefits of Outdoor Yoga
Practicing yoga outdoors offers a multitude of benefits. Fresh air can improve lung function and boost energy levels. Additionally, natural light increases serotonin levels, which can elevate mood and enhance feelings of wellbeing.
Engaging with nature encourages mindfulness and enhances focus. The surrounding beauty often leads to deeper introspection, allowing practitioners to connect with themselves on a more profound level. Whether it’s the sound of leaves rustling or the fragrance of blooming flowers, every element contributes to a holistic experience.
Creating a Sense of Community
Outdoor yoga also fosters a sense of community. Gathering in nature allows us to connect with one another more deeply. The shared experience of practicing under the sun or stars strengthens bonds and builds friendships.
When we practice together, we create an atmosphere of support and encouragement. Everyone brings their unique energy to the class, enhancing the overall experience. Connecting over yoga in such a serene setting can lead to lasting memories, shared goals, and a stronger sense of belonging.
Planning Your Own Outdoor Yoga Session
If you’re inspired to try outdoor yoga, here are a few tips:
Choose the Right Location: Find a peaceful spot that offers a flat surface for your practice. Ensure there's enough space for you and others to move freely.
Prepare for the Elements: Check the weather beforehand. Dress in layers and bring props like mats, water bottles, and perhaps a light blanket if it gets chilly.
Invite Friends: Sharing the experience makes it more special. Invite a few friends or family members to join the class for a social and uplifting atmosphere.
Focus on Mindfulness: As you practice, pay attention to the sights and sounds around you. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and how they contribute to your practice.
Keep it Simple: You don’t need a full repertoire of poses. Focus on a few that resonate with you in the moment, allowing for a more relaxed session.
Conclusion: A New Era of Yoga
Outdoor yoga is more than just a practice; it’s an experience that connects us to nature and each other. As I prepare to host classes again at Little Peace Farm, I’m filled with anticipation and gratitude.
By embracing the natural world around us, we not only enhance our yoga practice but also cultivate a deeper sense of peace within ourselves.
Join us as we embark on this exciting journey of outdoor yoga, reminding ourselves that wellness can be found through community and the beauty of nature.
